How a bill becomes a law

Hi Class,

Today we reviewed the worksheet on the House of Commons and reviewed some of the positions. You need to know what the following people do:

  • The Speaker
  • The Prime Minister
  • The Cabinet
  • Leader of the Opposition
  • Governor General
  • Pages
  • Whips
  • Sergeant-at-arms
  • Black Rod
I've added a link to a video that shows what Black Rod does. It is a clip from Britain, but because our parliamentary system is based on theirs, the role and tradition is nearly identical.

Check the link from a couple of days back to review the online guide to the House of Commons.

HOMEWORK:
  • Read the Guide to the House of Commons!!!
  • Work on your How a Bill Becomes a Law Comic Strips (Due Oct 1)

Take the test!

Hi Class,

Today you took an online political spectrum quiz and found out where you fell on the spectrum. Most people in this class were slightly left of center and more libertarian than authoritarian. There were many Gandhi's amongst us!!

Your political spectrum essays are due on Wed Sept 19.

Political Spectrum

Where are you on the spectrum?? Next class we will take a quiz to find out whether or not you are on the right of the left of the political spectrum. Or maybe you are somewhere in between??

Democracy

Hi Class,

Today we started an introduction to democracy. We talked about what democracy actually means. We also discussed a brief time line that out lined the history of the development of democracy.

Government unit

Hi Class,

Please make sure that you have finished the civics quiz by next class! We will review and discuss this item on Tuesday. Also, I will not assign any specific readings today, but you should have a good grasp of the content in Chapter 9 & 10 by the end of the month. So I suggest that you read 5 or so pages a day as we progress through the lessons.

Great work today!!

Thought of the day: So is Utopia actually achievable???

Workbooks!!

Please bring $28 to class next day for a SS11 Workbook!!!

Utopia

Today in class we will spend time talking about what an ideal society looks like! The goal of this theme is to understand what helps shape political ideologies, and the difficulties that exist when a political party is in control of a country.

As an example, consider the following... What is your favourite colour?? What is the favourite colour of your best friend?? Why do you feel one way, and your friend the other way?? Does it even matter?? What if a political party wanted to get elected and they believe in something that you don't? Take some time to talk about this ideas with someone at your table group!

Welcome back!!

I hope that you all had wonderful summer holidays! Welcome back to school!

Socials 11 is a challenging course and there is so much content to cover. So we need to get started right away!

Feel free to reply to this post with pictures from your summer vacation!
